Profiting off retro imagery

I have a theory about music something akin to Hillary Clinton’s view of child education (I promise never to make a positive reference to Hillary Clinton again): it takes a village. In other words for every super group like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, there’s several dozens of other bands back in the UK who form an entire cultural community that built the genre.

Today people would refer to the major stars that rise to international or national popularity out of these close knit scenes as sell outs. I think that’s generally unjustified because the big name groups have the capacity to send people looking for more stuff that they like. So when a kid hears The White Stripes and ends up finding out about The Dirtbombs and the Gories, everybody wins.
I think Tarantino and Rodriguez’s new Grindhouse project has similar potential. For example, today I not only downloaded the soundtracks for both films, but full albums for several of the artists who appear on it and an original Grindhouse style biker film The Wild Angels. I’ll bet I’m not alone.
